“The lyrical, folk-y route usually limits a songwriter, but it’s always given Doug Hoekstra an incredible amount of space to roam. Flyers in my hand
Screen doors rattled, the wash on the line
Danced like a crazy man
On the face of it, I must admit, there’s so much I don’t understand

And the garden plot that lined the walk
Was overgrown with blooming roses
